EXPULSION OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION FROM THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE

Russia, which has no experience of democracy and multi-party political life, joined the Council of Europe in 1996 as a full member. Russia has signed and ratified 63 of the more than 200 conventions adopted under the auspices of the Council of Europe. The number of contracts signed but not ratified by Russia was 16, and the number of contracts that were never signed was 130. The most important of the conventions to which Russia is a party is the European Convention on Human Rights. Although significant progress has been made by Russia in various fields due to its membership in the Council of Europe, violations have also remained. The most advanced stage of the violations was the attack on Ukraine. The attack launched by Russia on Ukraine on February 24, 2022 is in violation of both the UN charter, the founding charter of the Council of Europe and the Council of Europe conventions to which Russia is a party.
