THE 2022 RUSSIA-UKRAINE WAR FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF JUS AD BELLUM: IS INTERNATIONAL LAW STRENGTHENED?
In February 2022, Russia declared war against Ukraine in the hope of winning a major victory in the short term. However, the circumstances at the front progressed differently and it turned into a long-term war. In order to legitimize the war, Russia put forward the doctrine of the right of self-defense, the doctrine of intervention by invitation, and the responsibility to protect, within the framework of international law. Since these arguments did not fulfill the necessary criteria, Russia has violated international law. Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state. It has the right to decide independently on its internal and external status within the framework of the selfdetermination right. Sovereignty, territorial integrity, the prohibition of the use of force, and the prohibition of interference in internal affairs are and should remain the basic principles of the international community.
